my thoughts on “the fashion show” - a new show on bravo.

Posted in huh, review, tv on May 7th, 2009

for those who weren’t aware, project runway packed up and left bravo for lifetime.

so in an ironic twist, bravo was given a task (much like the weekly challenges on project runway) of quickly throwing together a fashion reality show and what they hastily stitched together was the fashion show. it premiered tonight.

there’s only so many things you can try to do differently with this format, so it’s perfectly fine that this show is very much like its predecessor. but in many ways project runway is the hotter, well put-together older sister to the awkward younger sister fashion show going through puberty. project runway’s execution is just more elegant while the fashion show seemed too intent on doing anything to differentiate itself. I’m certain the fashion show will find its niche and come into its own but that’s not going to happen overnight.

but let’s talk about the “you’re fired” equivalent for this show… are you ready? it’s we’re not buying it. uh, are you KIDDING me? you’re sending someone home with THAT?

paranormal state.

paranormal state is the only show I set my DVR to record all the new episodes.

admittedly it’s mainly because it’s on at the same time as no reservations , but boy do I love that penn state paranormal research society and their ghosty adventures! (not to be mistaken with ghost adventures which is a whole other show).

jon & kate on the soup again.

such a perfect combination: jon & kate + the soup.

it’s no jon minus nine but it’s still hilarious, especially the freeze close-up on jon at the end.

top chef season 5: dogfight.

episode 2… was a good episode, I just seem to have forgotten that the early goings are there to separate the wheat from the chaff. we saw continued excellence from My Main Man Steffan (”MMMS”) and the other european fabio, who, by the way, are hilarious together. they totally look down upon the americans but rightfully so – at least at this point in the season where they are clearly demonstrating dominance over the others. but there were also some serious trainwrecks by the chaffs.

and now for my thoughts that contain SPOILERS. don’t highlight the boxes if you don’t want to know what happened.

what the hell is jill’s deal? if he/she would have stuck up for his/her dish, or had he/she done more than shrug at the judges, he/she would probably still be on the show. but instead ariane got to stick around despite his/her dish causing a top chef first (?) of padma having to spit out the food.

but it was sad to see ariane back in the stewing room post-elimination, apologizing to jill crying “I don’t deserve to be here.” I think his/her days are seriously numbered… hey let’s not forget he/she has a zagat-rated restaurant back home.

top chef season 5: premiere!

Posted in awesome, tv, yum on November 13th, 2008

top chef season 5 new york premiered tonight! what with the departure of project runway TC will likely take over as my favorite show on bravo.

so as I like to do when a new competition reality show starts up, I pick an early favorite to win the whole thing. I was very closely studying the faces and swaggers of each contestant as they appeared in the opening title sequence and I picked out stefan.

those who saw the show tonight can highlight the box below to see how I feel about my pick so far. others who didn’t see it and do not wish to read spoilers… what the fuck are you doing here? I do nothing BUT drop spoilers.

GODDAMN RIGHT he won BOTH quickfire AND elimination challenges!

so yeah.

project motherfucking runway motherfucking season four.

Posted in awesome, cool, sweet, tv on November 15th, 2007

so the new season of project runway (4) kicked off tonight. after such an awesome season last year (can’t believe it’s been a year already) I wasn’t sure if I can be as into this one as I was for 3, but those clever producers over at bravo found a way to get me in.

I’m still learning the designers’ names and personalities so I’m not quite ready to pick my favorite yet… but I am trying to figure which ones they selected because their personalities make for good tv, and which ones they selected because they have an actual shot at winning.

what’s crazy is that all day I was like “there’s something important I’m forgetting about november 14… what was it?” and I almost missed it if it weren’t for kate.

damn.

monday means bachelor

Posted in tv on February 21st, 2006

so today’s bachelor brings back all the girls who were eliminated, strap poor travis in a chair and roast him in front of a live studio audience (how does one get tickets for this?). the down side: it’s only an hour long and it comes on an hour late. bleh.

all eyes will on allie “my eggs are literally rotting” g, can’t wait to hear what she has to say. well, actually there will be at least one pair of eyes taking in as much of susan as possible as this will be the last time we’ll ever see her.

…unless she does a maxim spread or something (YEAH).

these aren’t the droids you’re looking for (reactions to tonight’s bachelor)

…of all nights for my jedi mind trick to fucking WORK.

but, you know what, it was actually an easy decision to let go of susan. let’s face it, their overnight date and its conversations were awkward at best and all susan brought to the table was her unwavering beauty and a tiny bikini. travis questioned her motivations for being on the show every time he opened his mouth it seemed, so obviously he couldn’t have been too comfortable on this date. and of course susan’s inability to say anything that didn’t sound poorly rehearsed didn’t help matters much either.

let’s see a show of hands of who believes he had already made up his mind before going into this date? it wasn’t so much a “get to know her better” in a romantic sense, but more of a “get to know her true intentions” in a very methodical scientific sense.

so next week all the eliminated girls come to the ABC studios to hash shit out! I’ve been waiting for this episode since the first one ended. I want to see two things happen:

- allie g getting positively roasted
- susan being herself for the first time on the show

who cares what’s going to happen in the season finale? we already know moana’s gonna win this thing.

monday means bachelor

Posted in tv on February 13th, 2006

nyc got a record 26″ of snow and it’s freezing as fuck outside, but all is good because tonight is a new episode of the bachelor.

so tonight we see travis go off on these ridiculous extended one-on-one’s with each of the remaining 3 girls: susanfromkansas, moana, and sarah tennessee.

I’m done trying to use my jedi mind trick to will sarah tennessee off the show. it seems like it’s actually KEEPING her on the show, so tonight my jedi mind trick will be aimed at susanfromkansas.

…though if susan actually does get eliminated I just might throw the tv out of the window.

son of a BITCH (reactions to tonight’s bachelor)

Posted in conflict, tv on February 7th, 2006

so sarah tennessee IS IN THE FINAL THREE. I was shocked as anyone when sarah canada got sent home… too bad he had to give her an excuse so he had to dig out the age difference story. what it comes down to is someone had to go and unfortunately it was her turn this week.

next week they’re going on extended one-on-one dates all over europe. susanfromkansas (whose parents live in north carolina) was abso-fucking-stunning tonight.

so…

uh…

ok, I can’t keep it to myself anymore. I really, really, really do not like susanfromkansas despite her anthemic beauty. everything out of her mouth sounds insincere to me. we found out tonight susan’s fresh off a broken engagement (which she broke) and her parents are really concerned about her true intentions of being on this show. hell, she wants to go to LA to pursue an acting career! is she expecting travis to move out there with her? because tennessee (or colorado, as we found out tonight is where travis is thinking of moving) isn’t exactly hollywood.

on their pre-meeting-the-parents date she often began laying some romantic line on travis only to get stuck in the middle and struggle to make it to the finish. I forget how they went but it was something like “I think we were both put on this earth… (eyes sparkling, searching for something profound) to… have this… (perfect profile silhouetted in the setting sun) amazing… (expertly sculpted eyebrows framing her grey eyes) experience… here.”

sounds to me like she needs more work on her improv.

who’s next to go? I just don’t know anymore with sarah tennessee hanging around for so long. she appears best suited for mom-dom, or at least that’s what she’s making us believe. moana… hell travis could just be in fear of how she’ll react if she’s not picked, if she cries this much for still being in the hunt. susan… clearly the best looking of the bunch. but she IS fresh off a long engagement, she IS looking at moving to hollywood, and travis HAS to be keen on her telling everything he wants to hear.

realistically I think susan will be the next to go. it’s for the best for her career (she’s already had plenty of face time and she won’t be “tied down” in wherever). moana could go because as sweet as she may have turned out to be she seems rather unstable. sarah can go because she’s… just so ordinary and safe.

my prediction: susanfromkansas is eliminated and she won’t appear the least bit bummed.
