server upgrade complete.

Posted in and?, tech on October 10th, 2006

so after a whole bunch of hiccups the server upgrade is now complete. now I have all kinds of server space that I don’t even know what to do with.

everyone keeps telling me to see that new show heroes. I don’t think I can handle more than one show at a time - and right now that’s project runway. for two more weeks at least. then it’s lost.

expect to see an entry around this time next year when I’ll be like “why didn’t I watch heroes when it was on??”

server upgrade.

apparently my webhost is giving me a server upgrade so this site (and my lightrotation email address) might go out temporarily.

dunno when this will go down but it’s gonna be soon.

I got zinged

so my buddy ming swung by my desk and saw the gmail feature for gmail chat.

ming: hey wow, gmail doesn’t offer that feature for the mac.
me: (arrogantly) uh, yeah, there’s a lot of shit you don’t get on the mac.
ming: like viruses.

zing.

finally

I’m getting a new computer. this will be my 3rd computer I’ve ever owned and here’s the crazy part: every time I get one it costs about the same give or take a few benjamins. and yet each one is infinitely superior to the previous.

I got a dell dimension E510 and tricked it the fuck out, then went over to this site and scored a deal to take 3 (aforementioned) benjamins off.

getting a new computer is always a momentous occasion. it’s about time too, my current PC runs windowsMe. yeah. I think they have those now in museums in the “Failed OS” wing.

new things

1. new template
2. new comments feature
3. new link (dry your eye, mike)

yes, I finally caved and turned the comments on. in the immortal words of jimmy chitwood (hoosiers): “I don’t know if it’ll make any change, but I figure it’s time for me to start playing ball.”

the end of SmallTown64?

Posted in and?, tech, wtf on February 2nd, 2006

rewind back 2 weeks or so ago. I had apparently left my AIM on at work and came home and freaked out that SmallTown64 (that would be my aim screen name) was logged on. did someone hack into my aim? (why?) I hastily changed my password and went into work the next day and changed my password there.

now fast forward to 2 nights back. I tried logging on aim at home and I had forgotten my password. I tried everything I could have possibly used as my password and they were all wrong. and since I created this screen name in spring 2000 the email address I used to receive my forgotten password notifications has long since been deleted.

dejected, I began thinking of new names I could use. it was ridiculous to see how many variations of “SmallTown” has already been snatched up. will the real SmallTown please stand up? yeah, fuckers, it’s ME.

and then yesterday I sat down again to try and see if the new password would come back to me. tried a few… then BINGO! HOLY SHIT I’M ON.

so we’re back in business.

hey check this out

have you gotten one of those AIM messages recently? it’s what looks like a message from a friend, asking you to check out some link, but it’s clearly some sort of virus spread via AIM. I got a few of those today and ignored them, and so should you.

this has been a public service announcement.

you’re welcome.

work around solution for supposed rip-proof cds

Posted in anger, tech, victory, ♫ on April 5th, 2005

so I got the new static lullaby cd on my lunch break. I popped it my PC fully expecting iTunes to chime in and tell me it’s ready to grab the songs off the cd.

NOPE.

no media programs (iTunes, Windows Media Player, etc) even recognize there’s a disc in the drive. instead there is this dinky pop-up menu telling me I can only rip it to WMA format OR some sony digital walkman nonsense. it won’t let you directly grab the songs and convert to mp3.

but you know what, if it’s important to you to have mp3s of songs on these “piracy-proof” cds there’s a way around it and here’s how. you’ll just need:

1. a blank cd
2. a cd-rw drive

step 1: grab the songs off the cd (via the dinky menu) as WMA format.
step 2: burn the WMA files onto a blank cd.
step 3: grab the songs off the cd like any other cd.

yeah, fuck you sony. I paid for this cd and I’m fucking putting it on my ipod.
