michael or mike?

Posted in and?, sports on March 18th, 2008

I find it interesting how michael jordan is referred to as “michael” when he’s referred to by his full name, but if it’s just his first name it’s “mike” (eg: If I could be like mike).

but yet it sounds so weird if someone were to say “mike jordan.”

who’s with me on this?

this officially kicks off my annual (and sporadic) march madness rants.

Posted in and?, sports on March 14th, 2008

so march madness is in full swing. there’s conference tournament coverage every night this week and it all leads up to Selection Sunday when we see who made the Big Dance (aka the ncaa tournament). the tournament itself begins next week.

so the first thing to get off my chest is how some of the tv announcers pronounce va tech like vah-tech and not virginia tech.

if they’re going to do that, why don’t they pronounce ga tech like gah-tech and not georgia tech?

let’s keep it consistent.

fantasy basketball, anyone?

I just read a transcript of an interview kobe bryant did on espn radio today.

he says “you know” 101 times.

blast from (my) past.

I was digging around online looking for old high school swim team pals and I stumbled upon this site that keeps tabs on my county’s athletics records.

if you scroll down to 88-89 evidently I was all-county my junior year. and if that’s the case I should’ve been all-county the following year too, but that year’s not listed.

btw I went to westhill high school not staples. eh, these are records from almost 20 years back so let’s cut ‘em some slack.

sweet.

so there’s this draft

Posted in huh, sports on June 6th, 2005

so there’s this thing called the nba draft that happens every year in late june.

see, what happens is these nba teams select unproven teenagers and offer them millions to sit on the bench for a few years, at which time they’ll either:

1. get cut
2. get more money

the teams generally select college players, but lately they’ve been on this kick of picking high school kids or european beanpoles who can’t make the starting lineup on their own team.

this year the race is on for the top spot between these two guys andrew bogut and marvin williams. bogut (19) is a sophomore out of univ of utah, who’s 7′ tall and played for the australian olympic team last summer. williams (18) came off the bench for 2005 ncaa champs — univ of north carolina. yeah, that’s right, HE WASN’T EVEN A STARTER and the teams are drooling over his potential.

based on those two profile tidbits you’d think bogut’s a surefire pick to be #1 right? turns out the rumors are batting around williams going #1.

say what? yeah.

you have a legit 7-foot olympian, and an “athletic” 6′9″ kid who didn’t start for his college team.

I just don’t see why there’s any question.

matt bonner of the toronto raptors was interviewed in regards to vince carter’s return to toronto since he was traded to new jersey in a much publicized (bitter) trade. this is what he had to say:

“Uh, yeah, I mean, it’s tough to say, woulda, shoulda, coulda, ifs and buts like candy and nuts, you know, you never know. This, that and the other thing. Who knows? You know, there’s a lot of what-ifs. You know, my whole life is a lot of what-ifs.”

this is just awesome.

do yourself a favor and double it

life is good for the state of north carolina these days. first the goddamn unc tarheels won the ncaa basketball tournament, and then last night miss north carolina won the miss usa pageant. she even mentioned something about unc winning the tournament, to which miss illinois (another finalist, whose homestate university lost to unc in the championship game) had NO COMEBACK.

whatever.

say it ain’t so-whoa-oh

ah man, azubuike signed with an agent, giving up his final year of college basketball eligibility at kentucky.

this would be all well and great but I just don’t see him going in the first round. I mean, shit, I’d love it if he got drafted! but there are just so many kids out there on the nba teams’ radar. high school phenoms, collegiate superstars, european prospests…

the kicker is that the agent he signed with was an agent for two former kentucky players. neither of them were drafted.

ugh.
