an open letter to joey chestnut.

dear joey,

I just watched the the 3rd annual krystal square off on espn2. an 8 minute race to see who can eat the most krystal burgers? how awesome is that?

I think you’re great for the sport of competitive eating. you are the first competitor to get kobayashi going — we haven’t seen him get psyched up for competition in years and these days he’s really bringing his A game. if it weren’t for you he would not have eclipsed his previous world record like he did today. (ps- spoiler alert. oops, too late. sorry mike.)

but you really have to do something about your attitude. you are coming off as a really, really, really, really ungracious loser. it’s not even in a cool antagonistic way, your post-game comments are almost always “I’m still young, I haven’t been doing this for very long, one day I’ll beat kobayashi.” before the contest you got this cocky game face on, and when it’s over it’s this bitter grimace. fucking congratulate a guy who is hands down the top competitive eater in the world, will ya? you could barely keep down the last few hamburgers while kobayashi was still knocking those things back with a smile. ever see footages of muhammad ali prancing around the ring while his opponent would be wheezing and on his last legs? it’s like that. the gap between you and kobayashi is still huge, and you need to accept that.

the american fans aren’t going to root for you just because you’re american — as evidenced by the entire room cheering “kobe! kobe!” while you were struggling to prevent a “reversal of fortune.” accept defeat from a world champion, learn from it, and train for the next event.

don’t be a sour puss. you’re making it hard for the audience to cheer for you.

sincerely,

-aj naito

what is the point of…

…writing a very catchy pop song, so good that the lead singer is unable to hit the notes in the fucking CHORUS (read: a key part of the song that is repeated several times) so that is he forced to duck an octave lower — completely diminishing the dramatic effect of the whole song?

I’ve seen this band’s performances on tv 3 times now and the singer did this each time. so it wasn’t like he was having an off night.

it’s not important who this band is. what matter is these guys are a big indie-to-major success and even write their own damn songs.

I think it’s inexcusable.

they get me every time.

those game-like flash banners on sites, which you have to click on your mouse like a fucking fiend to “win” something. whether it’s beating up george bush, lassoing steer, a race to see who can dig faster, I can’t keep myself from going nuts on those things.

and you “win” a ringtone or something. but who wants that? I just wanna keep clicking.

I was wrong, and I couldn’t be more excited.

holy shit. jeffrey, the designer I had been pulling for since day 1 of project runway season 3, WON THE WHOLE DAMN THING TONIGHT.

want proof that I’ve been pulling for him since day 1? look at what I said back in july 17.

…right, I also did say he probably won’t win but that’s because I am just that pessimistic by nature. I fell out of my couch when they announced it.

congratulations, jeff!

server upgrade complete.

so after a whole bunch of hiccups the server upgrade is now complete. now I have all kinds of server space that I don’t even know what to do with.

everyone keeps telling me to see that new show heroes. I don’t think I can handle more than one show at a time - and right now that’s project runway. for two more weeks at least. then it’s lost.

expect to see an entry around this time next year when I’ll be like “why didn’t I watch heroes when it was on??”

how I enjoyed The Departed against insurmountable odds.

it was a rainy sunday morning, 4 hours of sleep, still intoxicated from the night before, getting to the WRONG theater (there are two chelsea clearviews on 23rd st)… and oh yeah, and that whole hollywood remake of a modern day hong kong classic thing.

and you know what? I liked it a lot. and I think it’ll do well because of the star-studded cast and the action and violence.

for those who have seen (the original) infernal affairs: don’t go into it thinking “oh this is a remake of infernal affairs.” right, I realize it IS a remake but they do change things up slightly and the film does stand on its own.

for those who haven’t seen infernal affairs: go see this, but also see the original.
