Take the quiz:
What Hardcore band are you? (revised)

Hopesfall
You are Hopesfall. You appear to be all heavy but you breakdown for way too long and stay that way for a long time but people like it. So you still rock.

there are two kinds of people in the world

  1. the one who asks “what’s up?”
  2. and the one who quickly follows it up with “anything?”

onto the final four!

today’s games were absolutely ridiculous. george mason in the final four? no number one seed in the final four since 1980?? I was just happy that 2 SEC schools made it in when we were tagged as being a weak conference all season long.

but, damn, what about george mason? here’s a team that’s played well above their heads throughout the entire tournament — playing against uconn, a team that’s played down to its opposition and barely squeaking by each round. it was an interesting match up to say the least, but the outcome was something I never would have imagined.

but now that they’ll be facing an SEC team in florida come final four I’ll be rooting against them. here’s to hoping for an all-SEC championship game between florida and LSU.

good news for naomi watts fans whose ncaa tournament brackets were totally fucked over the weekend no thanks to the heaps of upsets, goddammit

my take on 1-16 match ups (march madness ‘06)

Posted in conflict on March 17th, 2006

I fucking hate 1-16 match ups. historically no 16 seed has ever beaten a 1 seed, so the 1 seed coasts and the 16 seed goes balls out. what happens when a superior team coasts and a lesser team goes balls out? you have a sloppy ass game that’s only as close as the top seed will allow it to be. when it comes time to get down to business the 1 seed turns on its ignition and leaves the 16 in its wake.

so it’s basically the 1 seed dangling a carrot in front of the 16 seed (and any fool tuning in to see if there’s an upset) until it decides to win the game.

fuck you, 1 seeds. just do everyone a favor and make it a blow out early in the game.

I got zinged

so my buddy ming swung by my desk and saw the gmail feature for gmail chat.

ming: hey wow, gmail doesn’t offer that feature for the mac.
me: (arrogantly) uh, yeah, there’s a lot of shit you don’t get on the mac.
ming: like viruses.

zing.

we’re goin’ down, down in an earlier round (march madness ‘06)

Posted in and? on March 13th, 2006

and sugar, we ain’t goin’ down swingin’.

the brackets for this year’s ncaa men’s basketball tournament came out last night. for the next few weeks the productivity of this country’s workforce will plummet as everyone from pedestrian basketball fans to “heads” will follow the course of the tournament.

in an interesting twist, kentucky this year faces uab (univ of alabama at birmingham) — the very same team that knocked us out early 2 years ago. how do I think we’ll fare? as negative as I am on the cats this year I really do think we’ll at least make it out of the first round. but if we manage to slip by uab we’ll be facing this year’s favorites in uconn. so either way we’ll only go as far as the second round.

thus my quoting fall out boy for this entry.

with that said, here are things to keep in mind while filling out your bracket(s):

- as much as I hate uconn, they’re gonna go far.
- as much as I hate duke, they’re gonna go far.
- watch out for tournament-tough teams like syracuse and michigan state. they may not be ranked very high (5th and 6th respectively) but teams like these know how to win tournament games. especially syracuse who are on a huge momentum right now.
- if any team is ever overrated it’s gonzaga. here’s a team that hardly plays any decent competition all year, so come 3rd-4th round they’ll be in over their heads.
- remember, as much as you want to see a 16 seed knock off a 1 seed that’s never happened and probably never will.
- if you’re ever in a pinch to decide on who’ll win, pit their mascots against one another and base your choice on that. for example, pick the such-and-such state tigers to defeat univ-of-whatever fightin’ artichokes.
- and always remember: the eraser is not your friend. make your picks and forget about it. it’s like the SAT’s.

we’ll revisit this post at the conclusion of the tournament and see if anyone should ever listen to my recommendations.

thoughts on legion of doom

Posted in awesome, review, ♫ on March 10th, 2006

so I had a good week to sit down and have quality time with these songs. the four tracks that were released prior to the full length were more straight forward; a very seamless marriage of two songs with very little effects and elements mixed in.

such wasn’t the case for the rest of the songs.

with expectations of the songs being straight forward like the songs I had heard, it was a surprise to hear the generous usage of new beats and even featured rapping by the likes of KRS ONE. at first I didn’t know what to make of it. but as I peeled back the layers I saw what really is the genius at the core of legion of doom.

my current faves are lolita’s medicine [from autumn to ashes vs dead poetic] and ebola in memphis [every time i die vs norma jean f/ krs one]. thing is I don’t even like every time i die or norma jean and I REALLY like how these two songs are fused together. same deal for devil in a blue dress [coheed and cambria vs senses fail] — I really don’t like coca.

on the other hand the tracks I was really looking forward to, thrice vs alkaline trio and my chem vs static lullaby didn’t blow me away. but thanks to TLOD I have new found respect for some of these bands, presenting a new angle for me to check them out.

verdict: good times.

after ranting about it here, here, here and here it’s finally fucking out. but not in a legit way — after wading through miles and miles of endless red tape the album was “mysteriously” leaked over P2P networks and TLOD themselves are encouraging everyone to download, share, and spread the word. hell yeah.

I’ll be spending some quality time with this. I shall report back with some sort of a review.
