I’m going to rant about the uconn huskies

Posted in anger on December 30th, 2005

so I’m peeping the weekly college basketball rankings and I’m seeing the familiar names near the top week in and week out (with notable exception to texas and louisville who have since fallen from grace). I saw dook whip the living shit out of (then) #2 ranked texas so I’m gonna begrudgingly give them the respect they’re due. but what about the other team getting hyped? uconn.

uconn’s ranked #2 in both usa today and AP polls as they are currently undefeated. I recently saw a score where they beat unranked morehead state 129-61 with a halftime score of 61-30. now what motivated them to run up the score like that against an obviously much lesser talented team? where’s the sportmanship? take one look at their current schedule and with the exception of #8 gonzaga (whom they BARELY beat with a buzzer beater) they haven’t played A SINGLE RANKED TEAM (arizona was ranked at the time, but they were clearly overrated and have since fallen out of the top 25). all these sportswriters are going crazy over uconn — for what? blowing away unranked teams PLAYING ON HOME COURT? please. I’m going to let this slide as “we want to get in as much winning as we can until we lose rudy gay to the nba next year.” any half decent team can have an undefeated record playing at home against the likes of pepperdine, army, new hampshire, texas southern and stony brook. it just pisses me off they schedule cupcake schools and run up the scoreboard. I can’t wait until they get their asses handed to them. huskies, I got one word for you: louisville.

the lawyers of doom

Posted in anger, ♫ on December 26th, 2005

so back in the summer I was pissing and moaning about the legion of doom’s release date being pushed back yet again to january ‘06. to refresh your memory, the legion of doom is this collective that recently put together an album of emo mashups and wanted to release it legally so the artists will get their fair share.

the thing with doing things like this is, as honorable as it may be, you’re setting yourself up for dealing with miles and miles of red tape to get all the rights cleared. and let me tell you, working with legal teams is possibly the most trying experiences you can ever go through. here’s why:

1. they take for-FUCKING-ever to accomplish anything.
2. they’re never 100% sure of anything they sign off on.
3. they’ll come back with revisions even after they’ve given approval.

what do I think they should do? release all the songs over peer-to-peer networks without making any official announcements of their intentions. things like this will spread word of mouth while they can claim innocence.

why won’t they do it? because if this happens they’ll lose all credibility with the actual artists and they’ll be nothing more than audio pirates to the artists they worked with. not to mention all the wasted effort and money spent on legalities.

what will most likely happen? seeing how they already have their foot in the door with their song on the Saw II soundtrack they’re under no pressure to get this album released.

from a fan’s pespective there’s no point in ancitipating this release. it’s better to forget this thing was ever mentioned and if it DOES ever see the light of day it’ll be a pleasant surprise.

what I did on my day off

Posted in and?, review on December 9th, 2005

it’s surprising how little you get done when you have a day off. for the entire day I had planned on doing only 3 things:

- pick up a copy of beyond therapy for my acting class
- pick up a gift under $20 for secret santa
- go see an early showing of the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe

I figured I’d get out to the theater early so I can stop by the borders next door and get that play. I should be out by 1-ish, which would give me plenty of time to pick up my secret santa gift. I’d chill at home, give hayley some love, then off to acting class. bada bing bada boom.

well…

I managed to miss that 11 o’clock showing and talked myself into waiting for the next digital projection showtime which was 3 hours later. I farted around a bit, IMed with co-workers stuck at work and played with hayley. made some poor decisions on the two online games I’m playing (urban dead and the aforementioned project rockstar) that set me back a few days’ worth of activity. got a wrap from the downstairs deli.

got to the theatre early so I stopped by the borders next door. BORDERS. in a small shopping complex. what was I thinking? they’re not going to have my playscript! and of course they didn’t. sigh.

the 2:15 showing of the movie somehow didn’t start showing trailers until 2:30. 20 minutes’ worth of trailers later (they were all either remakes, sequels, or just plain useless) the movie began.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
at this point I’d like to offer my opinions on the movie.
I’ll start with the PROS:

- EXCELLENT creature effects and makeup (much respeck to weta)
- british accents

and the CONS:

- obvious religious overtones, undertones, allaroundtones
- unconvincing acting in manufactured snowy conditions (a new pet peeve)
- many scenes were so fucking dark I couldn’t see what was going on
- digital creature hordes in wide shots were sketchy
- several scenes straight out helm’s deep from the two towers
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

anyway I left the theatre around 5. dark and wet and slushy outside now. my boot (and subsequently, my exposed socked toes) got wet and I had absolutely no desire to go to class (especially since I don’t have the book or any work to present). or to pick up the gift as it’s mobbed by after-work friday mob.

so I accomplished 1 out of 3 things today. I’ll be taking every friday off for the rest of the month to burn up my vacation days (use ‘em or lose ‘em), and hopefully my next one will be more productive.

milestones

Posted in and?, huh on December 6th, 2005

everyone has little inadvertent milestones along the way in life that reminds them they are getting older. here are some of mine in chronological order:

1. first time I saw kids with “00″ graduation year patches on their varsity jackets
2. same-age friends getting married
3. younger friends getting married
4. realizing I’m older than the average professional athlete
5. all of my friends from high school or college are married
6. the few friends I kept in touch with from high school all have kids

and the kicker:

7. going to a doctor who is probably younger than me

first snow of the season, the cats get embarrassed at home, a new online game to doodle with

Posted in and?, anger, awesome on December 5th, 2005

it snowed this weekend! very little but there was definite snow accumulation on the ground sunday morning. I would like to use this as a segueway into kentucky getting embarrassed by unc, but our shooting wasn’t cold. in fact we shot the ball really well. we just got out-hustled by a rebuilding carolina team that starts 3 freshmen and 2 role players from last year.

how is it that we have 3 7 footers and none of them can rebound? I watched alleyne (one of our 7 footers) stand there and watch as a player 6″ shorter than him sky high for a rebound. pathetic. wasn’t he supposed to go to fordham? or like rutgers? why is he at kentucky? our point guard leads the team in rebounds. that should tell you something.

but I digress.

in other news I started playing this online game called Project Rockstar. you get to play a band manager and you assemble a musical group (or soloist) from a pool of fictitious talent and make them grow. I started a techno dance duo and called them Click & Drag. they recently cut a single called “Frodo Built My Hotrod” and they’re in the process of flyering the streets to promote it. wooo.

tradewinds bury fire from broken wings

Posted in and?, ouch, ♫ on December 1st, 2005

so as you may know, I’ve been really looking forward to the static lullaby / hopesfall show coming up next week, as I see it as the “one last chance I give emo before I turn my back completely” show.

but as you’re surely to know by now, it would be a really stupid idea for me to go with the current state of my foot. I’m not even supposed to stand on it, let alone dodging suburban teens letting out their suburban aggression to korn playing in the intermission. but I had been seriously weighing my options and up until about 5 minutes ago I was seriously 50-50.

well, 5 minutes ago I found out the tour was CANCELLED. someone in funeral for a friend got sick and they called everything off. thanks for potentially saving me from further injuring my foot, FFAF!

emo, you’re okay.

oh, update on my foot situation. I took it to a specialist yesterday and turns out I don’t need the bulky cast and the crutches afterall. I was fitted in a protective boot that was described by one as resembling a stormtrooper and life could not be better (considering). so yay.
